LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – More than four million dollars are apparently headed into the State of Michigan’s general fund coffers, thanks to General Motors.
Michigan was among 49 states and the District of Columbia that agreed on Thursday to a 120 million-dollar settlement with the automaker over allegations that GM concealed safety issues related to ignition switch-related defects in various vehicle models over a several year period. Reports of switches moving out of the run position to accessory or off positions, which led to loss of electrical power, led the auto maker to a recall of thousands of vehicles in 2014, but the attorney generals of the plaintiff states contended that GM knew of the defect a decade earlier but did nothing.
Michigan will receive nearly 4.3 million dollars from the settlement, which also includes non-financial stipulations agreed to by GM that addresses violations to consumer protection laws in the states involved in the litigation.
