LANSING, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – A member of the Michigan State Police force will be running in the world-renowned TCS New York City Marathon on November 5.
Insp. Matt Bolger was selected as one of seven runners to participate on behalf of the Tuberous Sclerosis Alliance (TS Alliance) to raise funds and increase awareness of a rare genetic disease called tuberous sclerosis complex (TSC). Bolger’s 17-year-old daughter Rachel was diagnosed with TSC when she was four months old, and had her first brain surgery when she was only one year old.
Bolger is an avid runner and hopes to finish the marathon in under four hours, which he says is less time than Rachel has spent suffering through seizures in just the past three weeks. Affecting approximately 50,000 people in the United States, TSC causes tumors to form in vital organs and is the leading genetic cause of both autism and epilepsy. There is no cure.
Bolger enlisted with the department in 1995 and is a graduate of the 112th Trooper Recruit School. He has served at the Paw Paw and Flint posts as well as in the Executive Resource Section, the Office of the Director and as the Assistant Division Commander for the Special Operations Division and Intelligence Operations Division. He currently serves as the Equal Employment Opportunity Officer and labor relations manager for all enlisted personnel. In 2017, he was appointed to the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Council.
More information about TSC is available online. Donations may also be made to support Bolger’s marathon.
