KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo investigators have released the name of a young child who was shot and killed last week. The 9-year-old was identified as Carl Atkins.
He was shot at a home near Lake and James Streets and later died at a hospital. The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety says the shooting was likely a tragic accident but they are still trying to determine where the gun came from and who pulled the trigger.
No charges have been filed at this time. According to court records, the mother had left her children at the home unattended when the shooting happened. A judge ordered the seven children out of the custody of their mother Friday. A pre-trial date has been set for August 5th.
