KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Public Safety is now confirming what we reported earlier, that four year old Nicholas Jeffrey Mitchell, who was shot by his own father during a murder/suicide on Emerson Street has now reportedly also died at Bronson Intensive Care overnight.
Kalamazoo Public Safety was dispatched to the dead end street on the south side at about 6:40 Thursday morning after complaints about gunfire.
Assistant Chief Vernon Coakley says they found the boy’s parents both suffering from gunshot wounds to the head.
They were pronounced dead soon after officers arrived.
The boy was still alive and rushed to Bronson Emergency where he was admitted in Critical Condition at that point. He would succomb later to his injuries.
Public Safety now says that Nicholas Allen Mitchell, a 40 year old Kalamazoo resident had an argument with the mother of his child, Ms. Julina Gale Gibson, a 30 year old Kalamazoo resident just prior to the shootings.
Family members say the couple had been involved in a bitter battle over child support and visitation, and court documents show he had recently been cited for failure to pay child support.
Autopsies are planned.
