WASHINGTON, DC (WHTC-AM/FM) – On the heels of an investigation for sexual harassment and workplace abuse, Congressman John Conyers is stepping down from his leadership post as the ranking member of the U.S. House Judiciary Committee.
The Democrat from Detroit has denied the accusatons from a former staff member who was paid by Conyers in a 27-thousand dollar settlement. The staff member says Conyers inappropriately touched her and made sexual advances to other women.
Arnold Reed who is the attorney for Conyers, says the woman has made the accusations in the past, but it went nowhere at the time.
“Because of the climate that we’re in where several other women have come out against other people and started the #METOO campaign, this was ripe for something like this to get traction at this juncture.”
Conyers has refused calls to resign from office.
