PONTIAC, MI (WHTC-AM/FM) – It’s the end of an era. On Sunday demolition will begin on the Pontiac Silverdome.
The former home of the Lions and Detroit Pistons also served as a concert venue. Many remember the general admission shows in the early 1980’s the featured The Who and The Rolling Stones. The Lions played in the Silverdome from 1975 until 2001, while the Pistons held court in Pontiac from 1978-1988.
The Silverdome hosted many national sporting events such as Super Bowl 16 in 1982 and college football’s Cherry Bowl and Motor City Bowl.
In September of 1987, nearly 93.700 people gathered for mass led by Pope John the second.
