LANSING (WKZO AM/FM) — Hearings will begin Tuesday in both the State House and Senate on an identical package of reform measures to shore up police and fire benefit funds for retirees, many of which are underfunded.
It has generated a lot of controversy, and even a large protest at the Capitol by police and fire officials last week.
State House officials have already announced they may meet three extra days, delaying their holiday break to try and put the votes together for passage.
Right now several lawmakers have expressed their opposition to parts of the proposals that were not recommended by a Governor’s Task Force on the problem, but added later by the Republican leadership.
They had a plan but it was altered and now police and firefighters unions are fighting the bills, claiming it could lead to cuts in benefits.
Kalamazoo House Representative Jon Hoadley says these are the people who risked their lives for years to protect society, some putting their own health at risk, and he won’t vote for cutting their healthcare.
Also listed among the current opponents are Senators Rick Jones and Tonya Schuitmaker, who have been strong advocates for law enforcement.
