KALAMAZOO (WKZO AM/FM) — Wednesday’s commute home was not a pleasant experience for most, and the drive today is presenting a different set of challenges.
The snow stopped falling shortly after midnight and plow trucks have had a chance to catch up on the main roads, but with temperatures in single digits, salt will not work and roads remain ice covered and treacherous this morning. Leave early, drive slowly and keep your distance.
Winter has gone from being a Currier and Ives print to an icy nightmare in a big hurry this season and the long range forecast offers little comfort.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Bill Marino says this winter will be nothing like last winter with its long periods of unseasonably warm weather. This winter will be cold, snowy and unrelenting.
Marino says if you want to know what it will be like week after week…look out your window. He says in some areas near the shore line the snow that falls this month may still be around in March, buried under all the other snow that is yet to come.
While this may not be your favorite time of the year, it’s the busy season at tire stores in Michigan. As soon as the first flakes started dropping, Mike Barnes says the phones started ringing at Belle Tire and they haven’t stopped since.
Same thing for private plow truck operators who only get paid when there are parking lots to clean.Gloves, and scarves and coats that have been hanging forlornly in stores all fall are suddenly selling, as are bags of salt and snow shovels.
