LAWTON (WKZO AM/FM) — A young man was killed when his pick-up truck was struck by an Amtrak Train cruising at high speed across Van Buren County just east of Lawton last evening.
Police Chief Jeffrey Mack says it’s not clear if the truck was stuck on the tracks or near the Nursery Street Crossing when it was struck at about 7:15 p.m.
The crushed pick-up was reportedly pushed along the tracks for some distance before the train was able to stop, with vehicle parts scattered for some distance along the tracks.
The driver was reportedly ejected from the cab, rushed to the hospital where he later died. His name won’t be released until his family is notified.
None of the 215 passengers on board the Blue Water Line headed from Chicago to stops across Michigan were injured.
The collision stalled the trip for those passengers, and two trains on the Wolverine line that ran later last evening. Passengers were reportedly loaded on buses to continue their trip.
