SHERWOOD, TOWNSHIP, MI (WTVB) – People For The Ethical Treatment Of Animals (PETA) has now weighed in on the death of four pregnant cows who were crushed to death in a truck crash in Sherwood Township Tuesday morning.
According to a press release from the animal rights organization, PETA is planning to place a billboard near the site of their deaths on M-60 near Stanton Road. The billboard will show a cow’s face next to the words “I’m ME, Not MEAT. See the Individual. Go Vegan.”
“At least four gentle mother cows died after this trailer overturned, and those who survived will likely have their calves torn away from them shortly after birth,” said PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. “PETA’s billboard urges motorists to prevent animals’ needless suffering by choosing compassionate vegan meals.”
The Branch County Sheriff’s Department says the rollover accident happened at about 5:50 a.m. Tuesday on M-60 near Stanton Road in Sherwod Township.
They report 67-year-old Elmer Detweiler of Colon lost control of a one ton truck which was pulling a cattle trailer on an ice covered curve. The vehicle slid off the road and struck a tree which caused the trailer and truck to roll over.
The 11 pregnant cows being hauled were then trapped on each other. Four of the animals were crushed to death.
The Sherwood and Athens Fire Departments had to use the Jaws of Life in an attempt to cutting open the trailer and free the animals who survived.
