DETROIT (WKZO AM/FM) — A Western Michigan University cheerleader who was home for the holidays was killed when he apparently became an innocent bystander, caught in a hailstorm of bullets fired during a drive-by shooting in Detroit last Friday.
Damond Carpenter would have turned 19 on New Year’s Day.
The freshman had been on the WMU Cheerleading Squad since September, and a candlelight vigil for him was held last night at the scene of the shooting.
Captain Darin Szilagy says they believe the intended target was an apartment building on Detroit’s Northeast side near Grosse Pointe and Carpenter happened to be driving by when men with long guns opened fire on the building.Carpenter was dead at the scene. Two others were wounded.
A gofundme page has been established to help his family raise funeral expenses.
