LANSING (WKZO-AM) — The Michigan Department of Treasury is warning residents about a phone scam targeting Michigan taxpayers.
The call comes from a fake Lansing phone number and the caller claims they’re with the department.
“They’re threatening the folks, saying they owe back taxes and, if they don’t pay immediately, somebody’s going to come over to their house and arrest them,” Terry Stanton, the department’s spokesperson, said. “That’s not us.”
He said the department’s actual communication methods are different.
“We would reach out with a letter to say that our records indicate you have either underpaid or you haven’t paid,” Stanton said.
Those who get the call should contact law enforcement immediately.
