Left-hander Kolby Allard went five scoreless innings, while Jonah Heim, Nate Lowe and Jason Martin hit home runs, as the Texas Rangers ended a 16-game road losing streak with a 12-1 victory Saturday over the host Los Angeles Dodgers.
Heim and Lowe each had three hits, while former Dodgers farmhand Willie Calhoun added an RBI triple as the Rangers won away from Arlington, Texas, for the first time since May 6 at Minnesota.
Texas’ road losing skid was tied with the 1961 Washington Senators for longest in franchise history. Allard (2-2) gave up five hits with one walk and four strikeouts as he won for the first time in three starts since joining the rotation from the bullpen.
Dodgers right-hander Trevor Bauer (6-5) gave up season highs in runs with six (four earned) and hits with nine. He also gave up two walks with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings as Los Angeles saw its four-game winning streak come to an end. The Dodgers ended the Rangers’ shutout bid on AJ Pollock’s seventh-inning home run off left-hander Taylor Hearn.
Mets 4, Padres 1
Marcus Stroman again provided length in a strong outing and Francisco Lindor and Jonathan Villar homered as host New York again defeated San Diego.
The Mets have won five of six, including four straight over the Padres. San Diego has lost six of seven.
Stroman (6-4) carried a shutout into the seventh, when Fernando Tatis Jr. launched a one-out homer into the second deck in left field. The 30-year-old right-hander allowed six hits and one walk while tying a season-high with eight strikeouts over 6 1/3 innings. Edwin Diaz earned his 12th save with a perfect ninth.
Phillies 8, Yankees 7 (10)
Jean Segura hit a walk-off infield single in the bottom of the 10th inning to lead host Philadelphia over New York for its third straight walk-off win and the second consecutive for Segura, who had three hits. The Phillies last recorded three straight walk-off wins in 2013.
Bryce Harper added three hits and two RBIs, and Alec Bohm had two hits and two RBIs. Odubel Herrera and Ronald Torreyes also had two hits each for the Phillies, who won their third in a row.
Phillies starter Vince Velasquez tossed five innings and allowed six hits and two runs, with five strikeouts and one walk. Archie Bradley (2-1) earned the win in relief. DJ LeMahieu hit a three-run home run off Phillies closer Hector Neris to tie the game at 7 in the ninth inning.
Cubs 7, Cardinals 2
Kyle Hendricks won his sixth consecutive start as host Chicago handed St. Louis its 10th loss in the last 12 games.
The Cubs won for the fifth time in their last six games to remain tied with the Milwaukee Brewers atop the N.L. Central. Hendricks (8-4) allowed two runs on three hits in six innings while improving his career record against the Cardinals to 11-3. Craig Kimbrel got the final out for his 17th save.
Ian Happ hit a two-run homer for the Cubs, and Sergio Alcantara and Joc Pederson hit solo shots. Nolan Arenado and Paul DeJong hit solo homers for the Cardinals. Losing pitcher John Gant (4-4) retired just five batters and allowed five runs after walking five batters. He has allowed 12 runs in 5 2/3 innings in his last two starts.
Blue Jays 7, Red Sox 2
Vladimir Guerrero Jr. hit his major league-leading 20th home run, four teammates went deep and Toronto pummeled host Boston.
Cavan Biggio, Marcus Semien and Bo Bichette homered over a span of four batters during the fifth inning, and Reese McGuire went yard in the ninth. Steven Matz (7-3) allowed a run on four hits and two walks, punching out eight, in 5 2/3 innings.
Rafael Devers had two hits — including an RBI triple — for the Red Sox. Nick Pivetta (6-2), who had allowed only five homers entering the day, surrendered six runs on six hits and two walks, striking out six in five innings.
Brewers 7, Pirates 4
Christian Yelich had a three-run double during a five-run fourth inning as host Milwaukee erased an early four-run deficit to beat Pittsburgh for its eighth win in the last nine games.
Willy Adames added an RBI double in the fourth, while Omar Narvaez capped the inning with an RBI single. Milwaukee starter Corbin Burnes allowed four runs (two earned) on eight hits, with three walks and eight strikeouts in four-plus innings. He also had an RBI single. Trevor Richards (1-0) pitched two scoreless innings, and Josh Hader worked the ninth for his 16th save.
Ka’ai Tom had an RBI triple for the Pirates, who have lost six straight. Pittsburgh starter Chad Kuhl (0-4) gave up six runs (five earned) over 3 1/3 innings, with four walks and two strikeouts. Erik Gonzalez also hit a triple, and Adam Frazier had three of Pittsburgh’s 10 hits.
Twins 5, Astros 2
Jorge Polanco went 3-for-4 with a homer and three RBIs and Jose Berrios picked up his seventh win of the season as Minnesota defeated Houston in Minneapolis.
Berrios (7-2) allowed two runs on five hits over seven innings. He walked one and struck out eight. Taylor Rogers struck out two while pitching a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his sixth save. Polanco has three homers in his last three games. Miguel Sano added an RBI double for the Twins.
Kyle Tucker and Robel Garcia each homered for Houston. Luis Garcia (5-4), who had won five consecutive starts for the Astros, suffered the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits over 4 1/3 innings.
Nationals 2, Giants 0 (Game 1)
Erick Fedde pitched five effective innings in his first start in nearly a month and host Washington handed Kevin Gausman his first loss of the season with a victory over San Francisco in the first game of a doubleheader.
Fedde (4-4) made his first start since May 16 after testing positive for COVID-19 and allowed four hits. He struck out seven and walked none in an 82-pitch outing. Fedde retired the final nine hitters he faced. He ended the day with a career-high 13-inning scoreless streak and has never allowed a run in 11 career innings against San Francisco.
Kyle Schwarber led off the first inning with a homer off Gausman (7-1), who entered the game with a 24-inning scoreless streak. Josh Harrison added an RBI double in the fourth for the Nationals, who won for only the sixth time in 17 games.
Giants 2, Nationals 1 (Game 2, 8 innings)
LaMonte Wade Jr. and Wilmer Flores delivered run-scoring singles in the eighth inning to lift San Francisco over host Washington in the second game of their doubleheader.
The Giants became the first National League team to reach 40 wins this season. San Francisco is 10-4 over its past 14 games. Wade drove in the game’s first run off Nationals reliever Kyle Finnegan (2-2). The Giants loaded the bases, setting up Flores’ single to score Wade.
Washington’s Starlin Castro doubled off Caleb Baragar to lead off the bottom of the eighth and drive in Yan Gomes to cut the Giants’ lead to 2-1. Baragar then hit Victor Robles with a pitch but benefited from Robles’ baserunning mistake to pick up his first save. Jake McGee (2-2) struck out the side during a perfect seventh inning to pick up the win for the Giants.
Athletics 11, Royals 2
Right-hander James Kaprielian threw six shutout innings while Matt Chapman, Skye Bolt and Matt Olson delivered home runs, sending host Oakland past Kansas City.
In a matchup with fellow first-round draft pick Jackson Kowar, Kaprielian (3-1) dominated, limiting the Royals to a single by Jarrod Dyson and a triple by Kelvin Gutierrez in his six innings. Kowar (0-2) was charged with four runs on five hits in his 1 1/3 innings. He walked three and struck out one.
Olson finished 4-for-5 with four RBIs for Oakland, while Chapman chipped in with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. Gutierrez followed his triple with a two-run home run in the eighth inning for the Royals, who totaled just five hits. The A’s had a season-high 14 hits.
White Sox 15, Tigers 2
Brian Goodwin went 2-for-5 with a home run and five RBIs to lead visiting Chicago over Detroit.
Tim Anderson went 3-for-5 with three runs and Yermin Mercedes had three RBIs for the AL Central-leading White Sox, who jumped on Tigers starter Jose Urena (2-6) early, scoring eight runs in the first two innings. Urena lasted just 1 2/3 innings, giving up eight runs (seven earned) on five hits and three walks.
Dylan Cease (5-2) was the winning pitcher for Chicago, striking out seven, walking one and allowing four hits in five innings of work.
Rays 5, Orioles 4
Brandon Lowe had two hits and drove in two runs as Tampa Bay continued its recent dominance over Baltimore with a win in St. Petersburg, Fla.
Rich Hill allowed four runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings for the Rays, who have won 22 of their last 27 games and boast the American League’s best record at 41-24.
Collin McHugh (1-1) struck out five over two scoreless innings in relief for the victory.
Reds 10, Rockies 3
A day after helping his team make offensive history, Joey Votto made some of his own as host Cincinnati used timely hitting and defense for a victory that continued the road misery of Colorado.
Votto’s two-run single in the third wiped out a 3-2 deficit and put the Reds ahead to stay at 4-3 as he broke a tie with Tony Perez for fifth place on the club’s all-time hit list. Votto finished 2-for-5 to stand at 1,936 hits, two more than Perez. Next up is Johnny Bench at 2,048.
Lefty Wade Miley (6-4) overcame a three-run second inning to post seven strong innings and help the Reds to their ninth win in 12 games. Miley, who also had a pair of hits and a walk, went at least six innings on the mound for a team-high fifth time.
Angels 8, Diamondbacks 7
Anthony Rendon hit a home run, doubled and drove in four runs to help Los Angeles rally for a victory against Arizona in the middle game of a three-game series at Phoenix.
Rendon’s sacrifice fly tied the score in the ninth, and the Angels tacked on two more runs to secure their season-high fifth straight victory and move their record back to .500 for the first time since May 2.
Angels starter Alex Cobb went three innings, allowing five runs and seven hits, striking out three and walking one. Alex Claudio (1-1) pitched a scoreless eighth to earn the win, and Raisel Iglesias closed the ninth for his 11th save.
Indians 5, Mariners 4 (10)
Harold Ramirez’s potential double-play grounder instead turned into the winning run as host Cleveland completed a comeback to defeat Seattle.
With the bases loaded and no outs, Ramirez tapped the first pitch he saw from right-hander Paul Sewald (2-2) back to the mound. Sewald’s throw home was high and to the third-base side of the plate, causing catcher Tom Murphy to make a leaping catch while Cesar Hernandez slid home safely.
Cleveland right-hander James Karinchak (3-2) struck out two of the three batters he faced in the top of the 10th for the victory. Hernandez homered for Cleveland, which scored a run in the eighth and three in the ninth to force extra innings. Jake Fraley and Dylan Moore homered for Seattle.
Marlins 4, Braves 2
Zach Thompson earned his first major league win and Lewin Diaz slugged his first big-league home run as Miami defeated visiting Atlanta.
Thompson (1-1), a 27-year-old rookie in his second career appearance, tossed five scoreless innings. He allowed three hits and no walks, striking out six.
Diaz, a 24-year-old first baseman, made his major league debut last year but has played sparingly since and still has his rookie status. He homered in his 47th career at-bat, hitting a 1-2 slider to right-center off Braves left-hander Max Fried as a pinch hitter for Thompson.
