Agribusinesses have undergone major operational changes in the past year due to COVID-19. The livestock marketing industry is one.
Chelsea Good with the Livestock Marketing Association says part of the change involved working with states to sign off on the fact they were part of the critical supply chain. Business operations also needed adjustments. Good says the first order of business was to limit the number of people at the auctions. Typically they’re a gathering spot for buyers and sellers as well as those just coming to visit. Safety also meant closing down cafés or changing them to takeout only. She says it resulted in consigners being able to drop animals off but not watch the proceedings.
Like so many other things, the cattle auction barn has changed a lot since March, 2020.
