DETROIT (WKZO) — The United Auto Workers union will try to get raises for employees of Chrysler, Ford and General Motors this year when national contract talks begin with the domestic automakers.
During the recession and the government bailouts of Chrysler and GM, auto workers agreed to concessions that included not having pay hikes and a no-strike clause in the contracts. Another major change was the enactment of a two-tiered pay system, under which new employees were hired in a much lower wages than in the past.
UAW president Dennis Williams says it’s time for that system to be scrapped, and Fiat Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne also says the two-tiered pay is offensive. Marchionne, however, wants the lower wages to be the standard pay for the industry.
