WASHINGTON, D.C. (WKZO) — Michigan’s legal fight over same-sex marriage will be taken up by the U.S. Supreme Court in April, with a ruling expected by the end of June.
The ban was ruled unconstitutional by a federal judge last year, but the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals reversed the decision last fall and upheld same-sex marriage bans in Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee. Through federal court rulings in the past year, there are just 14 states where gays and lesbians are not allowed to get married.
Detroit-area nurses Jayne Rowse and April DeBoer sued the state for the right to adopt each other’s children, and the case expanded to challenge the gay marriage ban.
