LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Farmers in Michigan are anticipating the possible end of trade sanctions against Cuba by the federal government, if Congress goes along with recent policy actions taken by the Obama administration. Jim Byrum is the president of the Michigan Agri-Business Association and says the state is well-positioned for success when the time comes.
Last Friday, the U.S. Department of Treasury enacted several policy changes, including allowing American banks to open accounts and process credit and debit transactions in Cuba.
Several congressional leaders, including U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan, went to Cuba for meetings with government officials and others over the weekend. Stabenow is the Ranking Member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.
