PENNFIELD TOWNSHIP, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Fire Investigators in Calhoun County say they have determined the cause of a blaze at an apartment complex in the Pennfield area over the weekend.
They said discarded cigarettes contributed to the fire at Bailey Park Apartments on Capital Ave. N.E. Friday evening. Pennfield Township Fire Chief Tim Smith said Monday that investigators found a cardboard box filled with cigarette butts on a second-floor balcony. They believe one of them smoldered, igniting the box and a nearby chair before spreading across the building and into a third-floor apartment.
Smith said the damaged half of the building remains closed to residents. They were permitted on Friday to obtain some personal items and he said the Red Cross and apartment managers were assisting displaced residents to find a place to stay.
