LANSING, MI (WHTC) – House Democrats in Lansing are pushing for a change in the drug forfeiture law in Michigan. They want to prevent police agencies from seizing property from the dwelling of a person accused of committing a drug-related crime and then selling the property before the person is convicted or acquitted. Sponsor Jeff Irwin of Ann Arbor says that the Asset Forfeiture Act violates the credo of innocent until proven guilty. Law Enforcement says the AFA helps fund the war on drugs.
