LANSING, MI (WHTC) – The State Board of Education publicly condemned Governor Snyder’s executive order that moves the state’s school reform office from the Department of Education to the Department of Technology, Management and Budget. The Board claims the move violates the state Constitution, but didn’t say whether or not it would file a court challenge to block it. Some Lansing observers feel that the EO is more of a political move between the GOP Governor and the Democratic-controlled Board.
While the state Board of Education holds its monthly meeting today, it is tomorrow’s special session that is of greater interest in Lansing. The panel will hold a second round of public interviews involving the search for a new state School Superintendent, with Vickie Markavitch, Scott Menzel and Brian Whiston answering questions. One of them will take over this fall from the retiring Mike Flanagan, and the board could make its decision following the interviews, which will be streamed online.
