LANSING, MI (WHTC) – After a final round of interviews, the state Board of Education chose Brian Whitson to replace the retiring Mike Flanagan as state School Superintendent this fall. The Dearborn school chief beat out Vickie Markavitch of Oakland County and Scott Menzel of Washtenaw County on a final 7-1 vote. The Democratic-controlled Board reportedly wanted a person with a “strong voice” to stand up to Republicans who control the Legislature and the Governor’s mansion.
