LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Efforts to add a thousand new officers annually over the next three years by the state Department of Corrections are underway. A class of 292 recruits has enrolled in the Corrections Officer Academy as the agency is taking training “in-house” instead of using community colleges to offset growing personnel losses, especially to retirement. According to DOC officials, the COA is costing the state 8.4 million dollars to operate, and new recruits will earn between 16 and 25 dollars an hour.
