LANSING, MI (WTVB) – Is Michigan ready? Agriculture officials say they’re prepared to respond if the latest outbreak of bird flu makes its way into poultry farms around the state. The virus has wiped out millions of chickens and turkeys in other Midwest states. M-Live says some poultry businesses are getting daily updates from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
Officials have advised poultry producers and livestock owners to implement strict biosecurity practices. While the risk to humans is low, the National Centers for Disease Control is urging people to take some precautions and also avoid wild birds as well.
While the CDC does not foresee an outbreak among people, work on a vaccine is underway.
