LANSING, MI (WHTC) – Michigan will be the first state to monitor beaches using a new rapid testing method for water quality.
It can quickly identify E. coli DNA in a water sample with same-day results instead of requiring 24-hours for a culture to grow.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality says the new tests will result in more efficient beach closures for E. coli.
Local health departments recently received $500,000 dollar grants from the DEQ to implement the new process.
