LANSING, MI (WHTC) – An education workgroup has delivered a report to the Governor’s desk detailing third grade reading proficiency among students statewide, along with recommendations on improving Michigan’s 40th ranking nationwide and arresting a 10-year slide in this area.
The suggestions include increasing the amount of classroom time spent on reading comprehension; ensuring every teacher has the training necessary to determine each student’s progress; engaging parents in helping their children’s literacy skills; offering additional time to students whose reading skills are behind by one or more grade levels; and providing teachers with data that shows how Michigan students are performing in growth and proficiency.
House Education Committee Chairwoman Amanda Price of Park Township, who has championed this cause in Lansing, said that she and her legislative colleagues will be rolling out bills based on the report’s findings this fall.
