ALLEGAN, MI (WHTC) – The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office Marine Division will be participating in Operation Dry Water, a crackdown on boating under the influence throughout the nation from June 26-28.
The National Association of State Boating Law Administrators (NASBLA) sponsors the nationwide initiative, which had nearly 7,000 officers participate in 2014. In just the three-day span of last year’s operation, law enforcement officers made 318 BUI arrests and issued 18,607 citations and warnings for safety violations.
This year, all 56 U.S. states and territories will have agencies and U.S. Coast Guard units participating in Operation Dry Water.
NASBLA reported in their most recent annual report that 21% of boating deaths in 2014 had alcohol as a factor.
