HOLLAND, MI (WHTC) – Kilwin’s Quality Confections is voluntarily recalling containers of its sugar-free milk chocolate caramels because they were incorrectly labeled, and may contain cashew. That’s a problem for people who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to cashew that could lead to a serious or life-threatening reaction. Nick Lippard, Kilwin’s food safety and quality assurance manager, says the company got word from one of its stores about the labeling mistake late last week. Kilwin’s contacted the federal Food and Drug Administration as well as the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to alert them on what happened. Lippard says five of the boxes of the sugar-free milk chocolate caramels were sent to the company’s store in Saugatuck, but none of them were sold. They have since been pulled off the shelves. The recalled product has a batch code of “82461” located on the back side of the package above the bar code, and were sold at Kilwin’s retail locations between March 19 and July 29. If you bought a box with that code, you are asked to return it to the store for a full refund. Consumers with questions may call 231-758-3905 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
