SCHOOLCRAFT, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — An intersection along U.S. 131 in southern Kalamazoo County that was the scene of a fatal crash last week will be improved. On Friday, a driver crashed into the driver’s side of an elderly couple’s car as it crossed the intersection, leaving them both dead.
WWMT spoke to M-DOT’s Nick Schirripa who said the department is working to finalize plans to improve safety at a number of intersections around the county, including the one “XY” Avenue at U.S. 131 near Schoolcraft. The work could begin in 2022 and it would change the intersection into a “Michigan left-turn” which means drivers on “XY” Avenue wouldn’t go into the path of traffic on U.S. 131.
Along with Friday’s accident, the intersection has had several other collisions over the last ten years, according to traffic studies.
