BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Battle Creek man charged in a stabbing death from August of last year has written an apology to the family of the victim, according to testimony by detectives. A preliminary examination in the case was held in a Calhoun County courtroom Tuesday.
The suspect, Wendel Barton initially told investigators that he was drunk and had no memory of attacking 38-year-old Justin Ash. The stabbing happened at an apartment Ash shared with Barton’s ex-girlfriend on August 2, 2020.
Barton says he had consumed two fifths of whiskey and smoked marijuana that night, but police say Barton did not smell of alcohol when he was arrested. He later admitted that he was in a fit of rage and jealousy when he discovered his girlfriend was seeing someone new.
Barton is being held without bond and the next court date has not been set.
