BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Binder Park Zoo in Battle Creek has completed a new Mexican gray wolf exhibit just in time for the 2021 season which begins Saturday, May 1st.
The exhibit will anchor an area of the zoo re-named North America, dedicated to animal species native to the continent. It becomes the second largest animal exhibit at the zoo, behind the 18-acre Wild Africa. Ground was broken in late 2019 and continued throughout 2020 with some delays related to the pandemic.
“The zoo is committed to conservation and protecting what has been entrusted to us, including saving wildlife,” stated Diane Thompson, President & CEO “We would not be able to accomplish our mission without our generous donors and community. The generosity of our donors made it possible for the zoo to continue the construction of a major new exhibit amid a pandemic. Their generosity and commitment to the zoo are significant and of great value.”
Mexican gray wolves are the most endangered subspecies of gray wolves and one of the rarest animals in the world. Once common in the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, Mexican wolves were nearly eliminated by ranchers who feared them as a threat to their cattle.
