KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – For some time, Kalamazoo city planners have wanted to improve housing for low-income residents, but until now, they didn’t have the money to fund it.
The influx of pandemic relief money and the passage of the County’s “Homes For All” millage has now given them an opportunity.
At their meeting this week, city staff told City Commissioners that they have high hopes to build affordable housing on vacant lots, add subsidized units to big developments, build tiny homes, and fund a long-term strategy to address homelessness.
Housing Development Coordinator Sherilyn Parsons says it will be coming together over the next year or two.
Recent studies suggest there is a need for hundreds, if not thousands of affordable housing units in the community.
