PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Portage Public Schools officials say after carefully considering Governor Gretchen Whitmer’s latest recommendation for high
schools to shift to remote learning and to suspend sports and in-person activities for the next two weeks, they have chosen to continue with in-person instruction for those who chose it, and to allow athletic games and practices following the protocols they already have in place.
Community Relations Manager Michelle Karpinski says PPS students and staff returned from spring break this week, and they have not seen an unusual
uptick in cases. She says they will continue to monitor the numbers closely and to follow strict protocols of masking up, social distancing, and hand washing, as well as following the state recommendations for testing all student athletes.
Karpinski says they anticipate that they will test nearly 1,000 PPS students next week as middle school sports join the high school sports starting their spring
seasons.
The district says it will continue to follow recommendations from the Kalamazoo County Health and Community Services Department. They are quarantining individuals and classrooms, and other groups as needed, and after consultation with KCHCS they are expanding the quarantine period for students and staff from 10 days to 14 days for anyone who may have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19.
