LANSING, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Michigan is unlikely to tighten COVID-19 restrictions again despite virus infections surging across the state, according to multiple reports.
A large increase in hospitalizations among young adults has been reported by state health officials as restrictions have been eased on school sports, indoor dining, and other activities. The seven-day average of new cases has jumped by 122 percent and on Thursday, Michigan recorded 5,224 new COVID-19 cases, the most since December of last year.
Governor Whitmer spoke at an event Thursday and said while vaccinations have helped vulnerable populations and elderly citizens, the new threat to the younger populations is very real. But despite the increase in cases, Whitmer indicated that there are no plans to implement restrictions in the state as a result.
Total pandemic cases in Michigan have now reached 642,869 cases.
