PORTAGE, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Portage fire officials responded to a fire Tuesday afternoon at a home in the 5700 block of Deerfield St. that left nearly $100,000 in damage.
They were called just before 4:30 p.m. and when crews arrived, they discovered flames coming from the rear of the structure. Residents of the home had all made it out safely. No injuries were reported.
Fire damage was limited to the rear of the structure which was deemed a 75 percent loss due to fire and smoke damage throughout the home. Total damage is estimated at around $92,500.
The initial investigation by the Fire Marshal determined the fire began near a clothes dryer. Residents are reminded by the Fire Marshal to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations for cleaning and maintenance of clothes dryers. Residents are also reminded of the importance of ensuring their home has working smoke detectors.
The Portage Fire Division was assisted on scene by Oshtemo Township Fire, Portage police officers, Pride Care EMS, Consumers Energy, and Suez (City of Portage water contractor). Station coverage was provided by Texas Township Fire, Comstock Fire, and off-duty Fire Division personnel.
