KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Township is the latest area to opt-in for recreational marijuana businesses.
Their Board of Trustees made that approval at their meeting Monday evening in a 4-to-3 vote. This comes after trustees opted out of recreational marijuana businesses within the township borders as a temporary solution back in May as they continued to look into the guidelines.
The trustees that voted no were still hesitant on the state’s unpredictability when it comes to the rules and regulations of recreational marijuana and wanted to wait longer to consider every aspect.
Their meeting notes state that “Supervisor Martin questioned whether we know what uncertainties we face from LARA and state regulation. Trustee Strebs stressed that we have done considerable work to address the issues.”
They will begin accepting applications on February 1st which will allow marijuana growers, processors, retailers, transporters, excess growers, event organizers and testing facilities within the township.
In a recent work session, trustees explained how the Planning Commission will continue to work on the other outstanding uses like marijuana consumption establishments, adult use micro businesses, and temporary marijuana events.
Those looking to apply will have to fill out an application and submit it along with a $5,000 nonrefundable establishment fee to the Township Clerk and/or other designee of the Township Board.
This makes Kalamazoo Township the first area in Kalamazoo County to begin allowing recreational marijuana businesses. The city of Kalamazoo and Portage have still not decided whether they will opt-in later this year.
