KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Chefs competed to turn out their unique spin on classic Girl Scouts cookies during a fundraising event in Kalamazoo.
The 2020 Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan Bake-Off Benefit took place at the Radisson Plaza hotel on Wednesday, February 26th where participants from Bell’s Eccentric Cafe, FireKeepers Casino, Zazios, and other dining locations vied to create the best desserts using the cookies.
Dishes from previous years include Samoa donuts, Tag-along bon bons, and Girl Scout cookie sushi.
Girl Scout representatives said attendees could sample the options and vote on their favorites, with the competition featuring local celebrity judges.
Communication Manager Brenna Smith said the event has been held for the last several years to benefit outreach programs conducted by Girl Scouts Heart of Michigan.
“Our outreach programs benefit girls who typically would not be able to experience girl scouts for various reasons,” Smith said.
Some of those activities involve bringing the girl scouts organization into the classroom, with staff leading community programs for area students.
A silent auction was part of the bake-off, with items up for bid including a golfing package to Mackinac Island, a safari trip, and VIP tickets to Bell’s Funvitational Beer Festival. Tickets for the event cost $55 dollars per person.
More than $47,000 dollars was raised during last year’s bake-off at the Radisson Plaza Hotel.
