VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Detroit woman has died after being injured in a multi-county police chase in Southwest Michigan.
On Saturday, February 15th, 22-year-old Carmisha Slayton was in the passenger seat as her boyfriend, 24-year-old Jujuan Gabriel, evaded officers who were attempting to stop him.
Gabriel was wanted on an outstanding warrant for possession of illegal financial transaction devices issued out of Wayne County.
Police began to follow the couple after Gabriel failed to halt for a police stop on I-94 in Baroda-Lake Township.
The vehicle was lost in the ensuing pursuit, before being located by an alerted Berrien County Sheriff’s deputy. Sheriff’s deputies in Van Buren County were told that morning that Gabriel’s vehicle was heading toward the county and they quickly began their pursuit.
Gabriel lost control of his vehicle on an icy road as he passed through Hartford Township. Driving at high speed, he skidded on ice and hit a utility pole, breaking three of his ribs and critically injuring Slayton.
She was airlifted to a hospital in South Haven where she later died from her wounds on Friday, February 21st.
Gabriel was treated at Lakeland St. Joseph Hospital and is currently being lodged at the Berrien County Jail, where prosecutors have brought charges against him stemming from the incident.
The suspect faces charges of second degree murder, driving with a license resulting in death, reckless driving resulting in death, fleeing and eluding, and one count of bribery.
