KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) – Kalamazoo fire officials say a fallen gas lamp led to a fully involved fire at a home Thursday night, which also caused nearby power lines to fall and complicate work to extinguish it.
Crews were called to a home in the 400 block of Phelps Ave. near East Main Street and East Michigan Avenue around 8:30 p.m. Fire suppression was complicated by some active electrical wires that fell into the street, dividing firefighters. The crews regrouped and had the flames extinguished 30 minutes later.
Captain Christopher Franks says at least one person was sent to the hospital with injuries, but their current condition is not available. Firefighters had to divert traffic in the area because of the downed power lines and Consumers Energy was called in to cut them.
The house and some nearby vehicles that caught fire are considered a total loss. The fire is still under investigation.
