KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Photos have circulated of an art project portraying everyday life in Kalamazoo being vandalized.
The unofficial Twitter account Downtown Kalamazoo posted photos of utility boxes part of the “City Snaps” project covered with graffiti in the city’s downtown area.
It is believed that the boxes were sprayed sometime between 9 P.M. on Wednesday, February 26th and 2 P.M. Friday, February 28th.
The tweet said that surveillance footage from a nearby business should have captured footage of a suspect.
City Snaps Kalamazoo was launched in the summer of 2019 with visitors encouraged to take snapshots of their time spent in the community.
Disposable cameras could be found throughout the city where amateur photographers could take the pictures, which then entered consideration to decorate 10 utility boxes.
Project coordinators in July looked over and chose photos from 20 remaining cameras at that time. 594 photographs were eventually collected by the time the interactive experience wrapped up for the year.
The concept behind City Snaps was originally introduced to combat the spread of graffiti, being one of the ideas considered by city officials to showcase creativity in the heart of downtown and prevent blight.
