NILES, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Customers at a Southwest Michigan piercing business are being asked to get tested for blood related illnesses after investigators found unsafe practices at the facility.
The Berrien County Health Department has suspended the operating license of Paparazzi Tattoo & Body Piercing in Niles after identifying unsanitary practices and unsterilized equipment.
On Tuesday, March 3rd the department said that while they have not reported any cases of illness resulting from the facility, they advise customers to get tested because of the elevated risk of exposure to other people’s blood.
Blood-related illnesses and infections can linger for years without any visible symptoms, so those exposed to another person’s blood can easily be effected without knowing it.
Anyone who has received a piercing for their navel, nipples, tongue, genitals, or dermal are encouraged to have their blood tested for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV.
Health officials say those who received ear and nose piercings by the business’s staff are not at risk.
The health department is currently in the process of notifying customers of the advisory.
Individuals without a primary care provider are encouraged to get tested at one of Berrien County Health Department’s two locations in Niles and Benton Harbor.
