KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Grocery stores are going to great lengths to keep their shoppers safe during this coronavirus health crisis.
Meijer announced that they will be installing “sneeze shields” to separate their cashiers and customers, while some Harding’s Markets already have their Plexiglas barriers in place.
Jessica at Harding’s Woodbridge says they’ve also been wiping down every grocery cart after each use to ensure the health and safety of shoppers.
Some grocery stores have been setting aside specific early hours for seniors, high-risk shoppers, or coronavirus first responders.
Meijer and some Walgreen’s stores even has X’s on their floors near the checkout area six feet apart to encourage social distancing.
Last week Meijer asked customers to refrain from shopping with reusable bags unless they are using the Meijer Shop and Scan service and temporarily restricted bottle returns. They even removed “Sandy the Pony” from their stores to prevent the spread of germs.
Despite Governor Whitmer’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” executive order, grocery stores remain busy as shoppers purchase what they need for the weeks ahead. Meijer has put signs throughout their stores limiting the number of popular items customers are allowed to buy, like chicken, pork chops, toilet paper, and more, due to an increase in demand.
