ALBION, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Calhoun County leaders says some work will be delayed for the demolition of the former Union Steel Mill due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The project to demolish the vacant industrial facility in Albion has been considered for years, and finally started to be formally planned out by local officials in late 2019.
In compliance with Governor Whitmer’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order, the Calhoun County Land Bank is putting a pause on most of the demolition work.
A released statement by the organization said that work will continue tearing down a portion of the building at risk of immediate collapse. The 10,000-square-foot portion faces serious structural disrepair and could potentially pose danger to nearby residents.
The short-term demolition work is only expected to take a week for the section to be entirely torn down.
Calhoun County Land Bank officials say they expect that planned demolition work will begin once the stay-at-home order expires, with a majority of the project being completed by the end of 2020.
