KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Public parks will be closing in the city of Kalamazoo to curb the spread of COVID-19 during the governor’s stay-home order.
City officials have announced that beginning on Tuesday, April 7th all city parks would be closing to protect public health and reduce the risk of transmission of the illness.
On March 20th Kalamazoo decided to close down playgrounds and picnic pavilions for use. Trails, lawns, and open spaces in the parks were kept open with the advice for park visitors to keep distance from one another and take precautions for their health.
After crowds were seen gathering in some city parks over the past weekend, city leaders chose to extend the closures to all parks grounds and activities.
“Anyone one that continues to use parks in violation of this closure may be subject to removal by Public Safety or other law enforcement action,” the city said in a released statement. “Residents are reminded that it is critically important to follow all guidelines provided by health officials, which include avoiding large gatherings.”
Some individuals were discovered by park employees to have bypassed caution tape set around playgrounds and skate parks, making use of the facilities against the city order.
Parks will now have posted signs warning would-be visitors of potential fines and penalties if they enter parks grounds or use facilities.
Beginning on April 1st direct-access playgrounds at Kalamazoo Public Schools properties were closed to the community in an effort to prevent the spread of the virus on the equipment.
Portage parks continue to remain open for public use of trails and open spaces though playgrounds, picnic areas, the Portage dog park, but restroom buildings will be closed during the period.
All of Kalamazoo County’s six parks were closed in March except for the Kalamazoo River Valley Trail. Residents are being encouraged by county officials to make use of the 22-mile pathway while at the same time maintaining distance from others.
