KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — A Kalamazoo driver involved in two hit-and-run crash incidents and attempting to leave the scene is being cited for serious traffic violations.
The 32-year-old man was taken into custody on Monday after being connected to three crashes that took place near South Sprinkle Road and East Michigan Avenue on Monday afternoon.
He was named the “at-fault” driver in the incidents and has since been cited for driving with a suspended license, multiple moving violations, and failing to stop at a crash scene.
During the first crash the driver crashed into a stopped vehicle at a red light that was waiting for it turn green. The driver then fled on eastbound East Michigan Avenue before returning to the scene of the original crash.
The driver then traveled in the westbound lanes of East Michigan Avenue and failed to stop at another red light before crashing into two more vehicles.
Unable to drive his battered vehicle, he attempted to flee on foot and was picked up by another vehicle at the scene.
The Kalamazoo County Sheriff’s Office says that officers arrested the suspected driver around the time they were picked up from the site of the second series of crashes.
Suffering injuries from the multiple crashes, the man was transported to an area hospital by ambulance to be treated for non-life threatening injuries. The sheriff’s office said in a statement that they last contacted the driver in the emergency room and it is currently unclear if they have been admitted to or discharged from the hospital.
The driver involved in the first crash and one from the second hit-and-run attempt were not injured during the incidents. Another driver involved in the second crash was treated by an EMS crew at the scene for minor injuries.
At this time police say they do not believe that alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crashes.
