KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The City of Kalamazoo has announced that more than two tons of recyclable waste was recently rejected due to contamination resulting from improper sorting.
According to city officials, 2.39 tons of material was contaminated and could not be recycled. The contamination included items such as yard waste, tires, trash bags, household trash and other non-recyclable items.
City officials attribute the increased output to Governor Whitmer’s “Stay Home, Stay Safe” order.
“We understand that the Stay at Home Order may have resulted in increased trash per household, but everyone must do their part in keeping the recycle stream as clean as possible,” officials said in a statement.
