BATTLE CREEK, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — City leaders have approved new projects to improve roads this summer in Battle Creek.
The Battle Creek City Commission voted to authorize the first round of 2020 road construction projects at a meeting on Tuesday, with planners saying that work is expected to begin in May.
Included are two separate types of projects like chip seals which extend the life of payment by applying chips to liquid asphalt, and resurfacing where crews add another layer of asphalt to roadways.
The following roads are slated to be chip sealed this summer:
- Riverside Drive – Beckley Road to Columbia Avenue
- Union Street – Michigan Avenue to Van Buren Street
- Upton Avenue – Angell Street to Kendall Street
- Roosevelt Avenue – Garrison Avenue to Goodale Avenue (The road will also be converted from four lanes to three lanes during construction)
Other roads will be resurfaced:
- Main Street – East Columbia Avenue to Dickman Road
- Main Street – Hamblin Avenue to Division Street
The Michigan Department of Transportation is additionally planning to repave portions of Dickman Road from Helmer Road to M-66. City officials say that crews at the site will be adding a right-turn lane from westbound Dickman road to northbound Kendall Street to improve traffic conditions at that intersection.
In a released statement the city has said that residents may see staff performing maintenance and inspections activities like tree trimming, lead service line replacement, and sewer inspections before projects begin in their neighborhood.
Road closures and lane shifts will be announced through the city’s website and social media pages prior to work beginning in affected areas.
