KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Earth Day activities are still being planned in Kalamazoo, though projects are being moved to a virtual setting in order to promote social distancing during the coronavirus outbreak.
Participants will be able to take part in digital activities and home projects instead of the traditionally planned events held to commemorate the day each year.
Earth Day takes place on April 22nd, but the city also observes Earth Week from April 18th through April 25th.
A roster of different events including online forums like the “Youth Climate Solidarity Discussion” will be held through the video conference platform zoom instead of in-person gatherings. Numerous online videos are also being posted through partnering organizations on social media during Earth Week.
Since first being recognized as a day to celebrate sustainability and environmental awareness in 1970 the city has planned numerous events for public engagement in recent years.
Past activities to mark Earth Day in Kalamazoo include projects held by the Kalamazoo Nature Center, a day-long festival at Bronson Park, and other eco-minded festivities to educate and engage residents.
Apart from digital opportunities, other resources like an eco-conscious coloring book and children’s activities can be downloaded through the Kalamazoo Earth Day website.
In a released statement organizers say the virtual event series was planned with help from the Kalamazoo Earth Day Committee, Kalamazoo Nature Center, Hope for Creation, Kalamazoo Climate Crisis Coalition with donations from local organizations and businesses.
