MATTAWAN, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The newest superintendent of Mattawan Consolidated Schools has been selected following a month’s long interview process to fill the role.
The district’s board of education offered Randy Fleenor the position after the second round of interviews were held on Tuesday, April 21st.
Fleenor currently works as the Superintendent of Lakewood Public Schools in Barry County, a district he has lead for the last five years. He was previously a principal at Lansing Christian Schools and Lowell Area Schools before being tapped to lead Lakewood’s district.
The search process for a new superintendent was impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak much like other school activities, with a series of planned community forums where the public could meet the candidates moved to an online setting to ensure safety.
Fleenor and superintendent of Centreville Public Schools Stephanie Lemmer were chosen as the two finalists for the role after advancing through the first round of interviews.
Mattawan Consolidated board of education president Scott Sylvester offered the position to Fleenor during a live-streamed interview on Tuesday night that was watched by 80 community members.
Replying to Sylvester’s offer, Fleenor said during the interview, “That’s fantastic – I’m very excited to be joining the Mattawan team! I’m looking forward to working with the board, teachers, and support staff in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition and set the course for a strong future. Go Wildcats!”
The district began the search process to find a new leader after Superintendent Robin Buchler announced in November that she would be retiring at the end of the school year. Buchler was hired to lead the district in 2015 after being promoted from assistant superintendent of instruction.
