KALAMAZOO, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson is responding to a recent study that declared Kalamazoo as the “coolest” place to live with the lowest cost of living in the United States.
Last week, the findings of a study released by PureWow were released, which listed the top ten cities in that category.
According to PureWow officials, the top ten list was compiled by cross-referencing data from the Council for Community and Economic Research’s Cost of Living Index.
To figure out the “coolness” factor, available activities such as those related to food and the arts were considered.
The organization made the following statement on placing Kalamazoo at the top:
“With the lowest cost of living composite index on this list, from groceries to housing (and a relatively low state income sales tax), you’ll find your dollar can probably go further here than other Mitten-state enclaves, like Ann Arbor or Grand Rapids. But what gives Kalamazoo the “cool” factor? The ‘Zoo is unique. It’s a mid-sized city that packs both a small-town and big-city punch—so you get your chili cook offs, farmers markets and your visual and performing arts too. Yes, you can have it all.”
During the wrap-up of a virtual Kalamazoo City Commission meeting Monday night, Kalamazoo Mayor David Anderson commented with his thoughts on the study results.
“We all got a bit of a surprise last week when a national publication, which I had not been aware of in advance of this announcement, suggested we were ranked as the number one coolest city in the United States with the lowest cost of Michigan,” Anderson said. “Leaving their quote behind, in my opinion, what makes a cool city is how we treat each other. Let’s keep being cool.”

Ok, I dont know who came up with that, but it’s a crock!!!! I make 23,000 a year, and my friend makes the same amount, and I can’t find him a place to live. I talked to several apartment people, and was told that he had to earn 3x the rent. Get this: the rent was 350/ month. Let me see,🤔🤔🤔 I have to earn 2,000 a month just to pay for a 350 a month apartment??!!!!!. When did this start? In this town, we charge people 500 or more for a room!!!! A single room!!! I feel like I am in it’s a wonderful life!!! And I am living in pottersville!!! People are paying a rediculous amount of money just for a place to live, and that doesn’t include utilities!!!!! Now wonder food pantries are so plentiful around here. Nobody can afford to buy any food!!!! Really!!!! No1 ,I don’t think so!!!
