ALLEGAN COUNTY, MI (WKZO AM/FM) — The suspicious death of a toddler in Allegan County is currently being investigated by authorities.
The Allegan County Sheriff’s Office says that deputies were dispatched on Saturday, May 9th to Bronson Hospital where a 2-year-old was being treated for serious injuries.
On Monday detectives were notified that the child had died from injury-related complications. An active investigation is underway to determine the cause of the child’s death, with the sheriff’s office considering it suspicious.
A released statement says that several individuals involved in the case have been interviewed and are cooperating with law enforcement.
The child has since been identified by police as 2-year-old Kayden Blackmer.
On Wednesday, the child’s father David Holmes told WOOD-TV that his son had just turned two on May 3. He commented that he brought his son and 10-month-old daughter to Allegan General Hospital Saturday. At the time, he was unresponsive, but was later stabilized and airlifted to Bronson where he later passed away.
WOOD-TV reports that swelling and bleeding on Kayden’s brain caused his heart to keep stopping.
It was later discovered that he had sustained several injuries, including a collapsed lung and fracture ribs. His 10-month old sister also had fractured ribs, along with a skull fracture. She is currently recovering.
The case remains under investigation at this time.
